9 - 10:00 a.m. Cultural Practices and Fertilizer Management Practices of Palms -  Mica McMillan, Ph.D., UF Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, Davie, FL

Healthy palms require more than simply choosing the right species—they depend on proper cultural practices and a thoughtful approach to nutrition. This session will explore practical strategies for managing palms in the landscape, including soil and site considerations, irrigation, nutrient requirements, fertilization practices, and common challenges that can impact palm health and performance. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how cultural practices and fertilizer management work together to promote strong, healthy palms while avoiding common nutritional problems and unnecessary inputs.

10 – 11 a.m.  Palm & Tropical Plant Diseases: Recognizing the Signs Before It’s Too Late - Braham Dhillon, Ph.D., UF Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, Davie, FL

From Ganoderma butt rot to other fungal and pathogen-related diseases, palms and tropical plants face a range of health challenges that can be difficult to identify—and even more difficult to manage once established. This session will explore some of the most common and emerging diseases affecting palms and tropical plants, with a focus on recognizing symptoms, understanding disease development and spread, and identifying factors that increase plant susceptibility. Attendees will learn practical strategies for prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and management to help protect valuable plants and minimize losses in the landscape and nursery.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m.  –  Palm & Tropical Plant Pests: Know the Signs, Stop the Spread - Brian Bahder, Ph.D., UF Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, Davie, FL

Palms and tropical plants can face a wide range of insect and other pest pressures that threaten plant health, appearance, and long-term survival. From lethal bronzing and its associated insect vectors to other common and emerging pests, early identification is critical.

This session will explore key pests affecting palms and tropical plants, including how to recognize symptoms, understand pest life cycles and spread, and identify conditions that contribute to infestations. Attendees will gain practical strategies for monitoring, prevention, and integrated pest management to help protect palms and tropical plants in the nursery and landscape.
