Nicole Craanen, MFA, NCIDQ, WELL-AP, LEED Green-Associate, ANFT, is the founder of The Biophilic Design Institute, where she teaches professional architects and designers to bring their innate connection to nature into the spaces where we live, work, and thrive. Nicole helps show how to understand and apply biophilic design with greater confidence, clarity, and care. Drawing from her background in interior design, human ecology, and forest therapy, Nicole’s work centers nature connection, interdependence, and the role of design in supporting human and ecological well-being.
Her perspective is shaped by her work with the Living Future Europe and WELL Building Standard advisory boards, as well as her experience as a yoga instructor and Nature & Forest Therapy Guide. She is passionate about curiosity, collaboration, and rethinking how design can support both human well-being and the natural world.
When she’s not talking about biophilic design, she’s exploring the world with her husband and daughter—and finding a little awe wherever she goes.
